A stronger Justice System April 2010

Dear Constituent,

Last month, our Conservative government introduced new legislation to bring back common sense to the youth criminal justice by toughening our laws surrounding young offenders.

Violent and repeat young offenders must be held accountable. That's why we're proposing to ensure that the protection of society becomes an important consideration for judges when it comes time to sentence these offenders.

This bill has been named Sebastien's Law in memory of Sebastien Lacasse, who was murdered in 2003 by a young offender. This bill will also honour the dedication of his parents who have worked tirelessly as advocates for the rights of victims and to make a difference in the lives of others.

I've included more information below about our new young offender legislation. As well, I’ve listed some of our other priorities to get tough on crime.

Protecting Victims, Tackling Crime
Tougher Young Offender Laws
Right now, a 17 year old can commit murder and get a sentence far shorter than most Canadians expect. Our Conservative government will require judges to consider giving adult-length sentences for young offenders who've committed murder when circumstances require it.

Stricter Sentences for Serial Killers
Our Conservative government is currently working on new laws that will ensure that a life sentence will mean life in prison for convicted multiple murderers. We will also require that violent offenders serve their time in jail where they belong, not in the luxury of their own home.

New Identity Theft Laws Enacted
Our Conservative government knows that Canadians deserve to have their identities protected to the highest degree possible. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's new Identity Theft legislation became law. Canadians have better protection from identity theft and our police are better equipped to stop these crimes before they are committed.
