Taking a Stand in our North September 2008
Dear Constituent,

I can't believe that summer is almost over! As we start planning for the coming winter, I'd like to share with you some of what our government has been doing in our North.

Over the past year, our Conservative government has defended Canada's Arctic by launching a new satellite, by surveying the seafloor in previously uncharted areas, and with Operation Nanook 2008, the largest yet annual Arctic sovereignty operation.

I believe that when it comes to northern sovereignty, it's 'use it or lose it' - and our government is making sure we won't lose it.

Strengthening Canada's Arctic
RADARSAT-2:
Last December our government launched RADARSAT-2, a new satellite that will, amongst other things, help us to protect our Arctic. The new Canadian satellite will empower us to have better continuity of communication and imagery in remote areas of the North.

Operation Nanook 2008:
Operation Nanook, which ended just last month included many of the Canadian Forces' civil and law enforcement partners in the North. This exercise in sovereignty is a large part of our government's commitment to bringing together the Canadian Forces and our partners in defence and security to ensure the protection of Canada's Arctic waters.

Surveying the Continental Shelf:
This fall, Canadian and American scientists are teaming up to survey and map the undersea continental shelf in the western Arctic. This could allow for an extension of Canada's territorial waters according to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
